past tense -ar verb conjugation
This is a conjugation chart for -ar verbs in the past tense. Like how we ad 'ed' to almost every word to make it past tense in English, these are a different set of endings than in the present tense. Notice how the nosotros form is the same. They way you would be able to tell if it's past or present would be from context. Here's an example using the verb comprar, or to buy.
· Ayer, compré esta blusa. Yesterday, I bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compraste esta blusa. Yesterday, you bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compró esta blusa. Yesterday, he/she bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compramos esta blusa. Yesterday, we bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compraron esta blusa. Yesterday, they bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compré esta blusa. Yesterday, I bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compraste esta blusa. Yesterday, you bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compró esta blusa. Yesterday, he/she bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compramos esta blusa. Yesterday, we bought this blouse.
· Ayer, compraron esta blusa. Yesterday, they bought this blouse.
past tense -er/iR verb conjugation
ER and IR verbs in the past tense share the same conjugation forms. Notice the nosotros form again how it stays the same for -ir but not -er. Here are examples with the verbs beber, to drink, and escribir, to write.
- Bebí el agua. I drank the water.
- Bebiste el agua. You drank the water.
- Bebió el agua. He/She drank the water.
- Bebimos el agua. We drank the water.
- Bebieron el agua. They drank the water.
- Escribí un libro. I wrote a book.
- Escribiste un libro. You wrote a book.
- Escribió un libro. He/She wrote a book.
- Escribimos un libro. We wrote a book.
- Escribieron un libro. They wrote a book.
